Hunting

Free Spirit Guide Service offers whitetail deer and black bear hunts designed for both traditional and compound bow hunters as well as gun hunters. We hunt from a large number of stands in forested, cutover, and field locations near the villages of Tatamagouche and Wallace, Nova Scotia, Canada.

We only take two hunters per week. When you come to Free Spirit Guide Service, you hunt with Rodney in the local area all week. You are not farmed out to other guides, nor are you part of a large group that may include people more interested in partying than hunting. Our guide service is designed for the serious hunter who wants to experience and appreciate the outdoors, and we are also ideal for a parent-child hunt or for a hunt with your spouse.

Accommodations

Free Spirit Guide Service offers big game hunts in company with accommodations and meals provided by Jubilee Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Wallace, Nova Scotia. The Jubilee Cottage hunting package may be customized depending on your preferences and needs, and they offer activities for non-hunting spouses.

Salmon Fishing

Imagine a morning of fly fishing for wild Atlantic Salmon, followed by an afternoon of hunting. As a bonus add-on for our hunting clients, we also offer fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon during your stay. There is no additional guiding charge. You only pay an extra fee for the salmon license. The Atlantic Salmon season usually runs concurrent with the bear season and the bow deer season, although it is always subject to last minute changes by management officials. Our local North Shore area boasts several of the few remaining healthy and accessible natural wild Atlantic Salmon rivers in the Maritimes.
Day Trips

Traveling to Nova Scotia this year?
Free Spirit Guide Service also offers day trips.

Outdoor enthusiasts will love "Walk the Brooks" trout fishing for NATIVE BROOK TROUT or brown trout with flies or live bait. Native (not stocked) brook trout are rare in many parts of North America, but we can still find them. Be prepared for a rugged day in the brush along nearly inaccessible, clean, wild brooks in the local area. "A real old fashioned treat."

Free Spirit Guide Service also offers day trips for photography and birding. Rodney worked for many years as a professional photographer traveling across northern Canada. We offer photography assistance as well as trips to local scenic areas. As amateur birders, we also offer trips to a variety of ecosystems and wetlands in the area on both private and public lands.

During the winter, we offer guided hunting for snowshoe hare. It's a refreshing, challenging day in the winter environment.

They are small seaside communities in a rural area with a resource-based economy. We are easily accessible by both road and air. For visitors traveling by road from the U.S., we are about six and one-half hours driving time from Bangor, Maine, via Route 9 and the Calais - St. Stephen border crossing. For visitors traveling by air, both the Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Moncton, New Brunswick, International Airports offer regular service to many cities.

Licensing and Firearm Importation

Prices do not include hunting and fishing licenses.

Fishing licenses are available locally.

Bow hunters should fax or send copies of their bowhunting certificate or a copy of their most recent bowhunting license to us in advance so we can pick up their license at the Department of Natural Resources. The license fee will be added to your bill. There are no restrictions on entering Canada with a traditional bow or a compound bow. Cross bows are controlled under the Firearms Act and they are not legal for hunting in the province of Nova Scotia.

Gun hunting licenses are available locally.
You must hold a valid hunter safety certificate.

We do not handle the importation of firearms for hunting. The importation of firearms is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Canada. Please visit the web site of the Canadian Border Services Agency to obtain information for visitors to Canada including firearms importation and transportation regulations. This web site also has a list of border stations, and you should directly contact the border station where you will enter Canada before you travel, because advance submission of your declaration may be required. The non-resident firearms declaration can be downloaded from the web site of the Canada Firearms Center. Please note the comment on that site about refraining from signing the declaration until you are in the presence of the customs officer. We would like to stress that hunters and their firearms are very welcome in Canada, but all firearms are strictly regulated. It is very important to complete arrangements in advance, and then to cross the border on the day and in the location for which you have made arrangements. Firearms declarations are not transferable between border posts. Thorough advance planning will help you reduce delays at the border.
